Alarm Panic Device Guide: When & How to Choose
Alarmed panic devices sound an integrated alarm the moment the push bar is operated, deterring unauthorized use of emergency exits while still providing immediate egress. They are most commonly push bar (touch bar) style exit devices because the larger housing provides more interior space for alarm circuitry and battery components.
Applications
When to use an alarmed panic device
On fire exits where the door must remain closed except in emergencies.
To discourage unauthorized use of emergency exit doors in schools, offices, and retail buildings.
On doors leading to rooftops, mechanical rooms, or dangerous maintenance areas where access must be monitored.
On side and rear doors of retail buildings to prevent theft and unauthorized exit with merchandise.
Buying Guide
4 features to consider when choosing an alarm panic device
1. How the alarm is triggered
On most alarmed exit devices the alarm sounds immediately when the push bar is pressed from inside. Entry from the outside using a key does not trigger the alarm. This allows authorized staff to enter normally without setting off the alert.
2. How the alarm is powered
Most alarm rim exit devices are battery powered — easy to install anywhere without running electrical wiring. Some models are hardwired for integration with building alarm systems. Confirm power requirements before ordering.
3. Can the alarm be disabled?
Many models include a key mortise cylinder to activate or deactivate the alarm as needed — useful for scheduled deliveries or maintenance windows where the door will be in frequent use.
4. Adjustable alarm duration and rearm time
Many alarmed panic devices have field adjustable alarm sound duration and rearm time settings — allowing you to customize how long the alarm sounds and how quickly it resets after being triggered.
