Door Hinge Guide - Continuous Gear Hinge Types

Continuous Gear Hinges are offer in 3 different mounting types, Full Mortise, Full Surface and Half Surface. All 3 types function the same, the difference is where they are fastened to the door and the door frame.

Mounting Types

full mortise continuous gear hinge

The full mortise continuous gear hinge is designed mainly for new door applications, and is fastened so as to conceal both leaves.

Full mortise hinges will cover the existing standard hinge preps. If your door frame and/or door have cutouts for typical butt hinges the leaves of your full mortise continuous gear hinge will hide them.

The frame leaf is typically fastened to the door frame jamb with self threading #12-24 screws. The door leaf is fastened to the door edge with the same self threading #12-24 screws. For wood doors and or door frames, #12 wood screws should be substituted.

full surface continuous gear hinge

The full surface continuous gear hinge is designed mainly for renovations and retrofitting. They are fastened to the exposed door and frame faces.

Using a full surface hinge when retrofitting may allow the hinge side gap to remain the same. This would keep the latch side gap as it was with standard hinges. The hinge side gap clearance can be as narrow as 1/16".

The frame leaf is typically fastened to the door frame face with self threading #12-24 screws. The door leaf is fastened to the door face with 1/4" - 20 thru-bolts and self threading #12-24 screws. For wood doors and/or frames, #12 wood screws should be substituted.

half surface continuous gear hinge

The half surface continuous gear hinge is designed mainly for renovations and retrofitting. The door leaf is fastened to the exposed surface of the door face and the frame leaf is fastened to the concealed surface of the frame.

Half surface hinges will cover the existing standard hinge preps.

The frame leaf is typically fastened to the door frame jamb with self threading #12-24 screws. The door leaf is fastened to the door face with 1/4" - 20 thru-bolts and self threading #12-24 screws. For wood doors and/or frames, #12 wood screws should be substituted.
