Double acting spring hinges allow a door to swing open in either direction and automatically return to the closed position. They are available in a wide range of sizes to accommodate different door weights and dimensions. This guide covers proper hinge placement on single doors and double door assemblies.

Hinge Placement

Spring hinge locations on a single door

Key Rule

Use three hinges on each door. Install the center hinge as close as possible to the top hinge for maximum support at the top of the door where stress is highest.

The diagram shows the recommended hinge placement positions for standard door heights. For help selecting the right size double acting spring hinge for your door's weight and dimensions, see our Bommer Double Acting Hinge Selection Charts.
