Want your door hardware's finish to look brand new for years to come? The right cleaning routine makes all the difference — and varies by finish type. Follow the instructions below for your specific finish to keep your hardware looking its best.

Never use these on any finish

Avoid caustic cleaners such as paint removers, toothpaste, or drain cleaners. Never use steel wool or stiff-bristled scrub brushes — they scratch polished finishes, damage the coating, and expose the base metal to corrosion.

Finish Type 1

Lacquered & clear-coated finishes — polished brass and similar

Finishes like polished brass should be cleaned every few weeks — especially in harsh conditions like the salty air of coastal areas.

1

Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe away dirt and residue. A mild soap may be used if needed.

2

Wipe completely dry with a soft cloth.

3

Optionally apply a thin layer of non-caustic wax — such as carnauba car wax — to reduce shallow scratches and protect the finish for a long-lasting shine.

Finish Type 2

Non-lacquered & living finishes — oil-rubbed bronze and similar

Living finishes like true oil-rubbed bronze are designed to change over time. Normal use gradually removes some of the finish, revealing the brass underneath — this is part of their natural beauty, not a defect.

Note: The finish on all non-lacquered hardware will change over time in high-traffic areas regardless of care. This natural patina is expected and desirable.

1

Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. Do not scrub unless you want to speed up the natural aging process.

2

Apply a thin layer of oil — such as vegetable oil — to help prolong the original finish.

3

Follow up with a non-caustic clear paste wax to seal and protect.

Finish Type 3

Stainless steel finishes

Cleaning stainless steel door hardware is similar to caring for lacquered finishes — regular wiping is the key, especially for exterior doors exposed to the elements.

1

Wipe down regularly with a soft, damp cloth — particularly for exterior door hardware.

2

A mild cleaner may be used if needed for stubborn grime.

3

Polish with a non-caustic wax — carnauba wax works here too — to restore the shine.
