Hold Open Door Stops — Kickdown, Hook, Plunger & Prop Open
Need a door stop that will positively hold a door open — not just stop it from swinging? This guide covers every type of hold-open door stop we carry, from simple kickdowns to heavy-duty hook stops for exterior doors and doors with closers.
Door closer installed? A standard magnetic door stop will not hold a door open against a closer — most closers apply 5+ ft-lbs of closing force. You'll need a hook stop, plunger stop, or an electromagnetic door holder instead.
Type 1
Kickdown door stops — easiest to operate
Simple to install and use — just kick the arm down with your foot and the rubber tip holds the door in the open position. Kick it back up to release. Available in three lengths to suit different door heights and clearances.
Type 2
Kick around door stops — great for glass doors
Simply pivot the end of the stop with your foot to swing it into position — the rubber bumper cradles the door and holds it open. Kick it back when you want to close the door. Installs with a single mounting screw for a clean look.
Works on wood, metal, and glass doors — including glass storefront entry doors. Good for both residential and commercial applications.
Type 3
Plunger door stops — hands-free, popular on commercial doors
Spring-loaded and completely hands-free. Push the plunger down with your foot to activate and hold the door open — press the release tab with your foot to let the door close. Popular on commercial doors, storefront entries, and high-traffic applications.
Type 4
Hook door stops — heavy duty, exterior doors & doors with closers
Hook door stops are the heavy-duty solution for exterior doors, entry and patio doors, doors with closers, and doors subject to wind. The manually operated hook locks the door firmly in the open position. Made by Deltana in solid brass with 9 finish options.
Which hook stop do I need?
Wide gap or step-down at door bottom: Use the wall-mount hook stop, 6" floor hook stop, or 8" floor hook stop.
Cement floors (including tile, laminate, carpet over cement): Use the Deltana DSF444 — packaged with a heavy-duty cement anchor.
Wood floors / standard duty: Use the Deltana SAHF358 3" floor hook stop.
Type 5
Prop open door stop — no installation required
The prop open door stop requires zero installation — no drilling, no screws. Simply slide it in front of the door when you need it held open. At 3-5/8" diameter and 2½ lbs, its size and weight mass do the work.
Works on wood, metal, and glass doors in both residential and commercial applications.
