The standard plain bearing door hinge is simply two metal halves joined by a pin. When replacing hinges, three things determine the right match: the corner radius style, the size, and the material. This page covers corner radius — the most overlooked spec when ordering replacement hinges.

Step 1 of 3

Door hinge corner radius: the 3 styles

There are 3 corner radius styles. You must match your existing hinge mortise exactly — a square corner hinge will not sit flush in a rounded mortise and vice versa.

Square corner door hinge

Square Corner

A clean 90° corner. Most common on commercial steel doors and newer construction.

1/4 inch radius corner door hinge

¼" Radius Corner

A small rounded corner. The radius matches the edge of a US dime. Most common on residential interior doors.

5/8 inch radius corner door hinge

⅝" Radius Corner

A larger rounded corner. The radius matches the edge of a US quarter. Common on older residential doors.

Pro Tip

Not sure if you have a ¼" or ⅝" radius? Measure from where the curve begins to where the corner of the hinge would be if it were square. That measurement is your radius.
