Choosing between Antique, Polished, and Satin finishes? The difference is dramatic — and understanding how each finish is made helps you choose the right one for your space. This guide covers brass and nickel finishes, manufacturer terminology, and what "living" vs. "non-living" finish actually means.

Terminology note

Different manufacturers use different terms for the same finish. Polished = Bright (Polished Brass and Bright Brass are the same color). Satin = Brushed (Satin Nickel and Brushed Nickel are the same). Keep this in mind when matching hardware across brands.

The 3 Finish Types

How each finish is made — and what it looks like

Finish 1

Antique — dark, aged, oxidized look

Parts are placed in an oxidizing solution that rapidly ages them to near-black. Then a soft brush or cloth removes most of the solution — the speed of removal determines how light or dark the final finish is. This is why Antique Brass and Antique Nickel items can have subtle shade differences, especially across manufacturers.

Non-living finish — parts are lacquered after antiquing to prevent further aging.

Finish 2

Polished / Bright — high shine, mirror-like luster

Parts are buffed through progressive stages using increasingly fine polishing compounds. Each stage adds more shine, creating a rich, mirrored effect. Polished Brass has been an enduringly popular choice for traditional and formal interiors for this reason.

Non-living finish — clear lacquer protects the polish. Some products are available in Unlacquered Polished Brass (a living finish that will develop a natural patina over time).

Finish 3

Satin / Brushed — soft, warm, low-luster look

Fine abrasive materials — including sandpaper and sanding brushes — are used to soften the metal's surface color. The reduced luster adds warmth to the finish. Satin Nickel has been a go-to for traditional and contemporary designers for decades, while Satin Brass is currently the finish of choice for modern and trendy designs.

Non-living finish — lacquered to maintain the consistent satin appearance.
