As custom doors become more common, the door thickness (typically 2" or more)
becomes an issue for standard tubular door
handlesets.
Most handlesets are set to work on the standard exterior door thickness of 1-3/4"
and will not function on thicker doors.
Some manufacturers are providing optional thick door kits (for doors up to 2-1/4" thick)
to fix the problem,
however having a door thicker than 1-3/4" will definitely limit your choices.
Since door pulls do not have an internal working mechanism they can be
installed on any door thickness and with all of the design choices available,
including custom door pulls, you are limited only by your imagination!
Because door pulls do not have a latching mechanism to keep the door
from hanging open when you go out to get the mail,
you will need a
heavy duty roller catch installed.
The beauty of a roller catch is that it can be installed practically anywhere
on the top, bottom and/or edge of the door.
You will need to
install a deadbolt lock for security,
and with all the lower profile choices
available, you will have no problem finding one that will integrate nicely
with your new door pulls.
If you have a double entry you will need to install
flush bolts
at the top and bottom of the edge of the inactive door.
This provides a stable area for the deadbolt to lock into.
Finish the overall look of your entryway with a matching
door knocker and
doorbell plate and you have an elegant look that will
truly make the neighbors want one of their own!
